Ten years ago, I sewed my first version of Denyse Schmidt's Free-Wheeling Single Girl pattern. It was a baby quilt in pretty pinks. I was a bit put off by thoughts of all the work involved in tracing the pattern pieces onto template material, but I came up with an easier solution. I discovered that I could use freezer paper instead, which I could then press onto my fabric scraps for easy, accurate cutting (check out my previous post here).

Years ago, I sketched up a tulip quilt block that I later turned into a pattern (click here for the terrific tulip) to sew a 12" block. I stitched together a few versions of my block and tucked them away, with the thought that one day I would love to sew a quilt using this block. Each Spring, I would look at those blocks and feel a bit guilty that I still hadn't taken the time to work out a quilt design featuring them, but kept putting it off.

Intrigued, I kept playing with the block design, eventually settling on a mini quilt design, showcasing a smaller scale (slightly modified - with multiple sizes) version and released the Tiny Terrific Tulips Mini Quilt pattern in April of this year. My pattern testing lead to lots of tulip block sewing with various fabric combinations. I have always been drawn to scrappy quilting, so no surprise that the versions I loved most from my experimenting, were the scrappiest ones.

Katherine
