Thrifty Quilt

The colder temperatures have encouraged me to tackle the collection of plaid shirts I've been wanting to re purpose into a quilt.
Half of this bin has been home to the growing stash of thrifted and culled from my boys' closets, cotton plaid shirts.
My rotary cutter makes quick work of the shirts. An added bonus of cutting up shirts is all the buttons! Yep, I have a button collection too.
This is my progress so far. I plan on making more blocks and I will be adding one more round to each, which will make each block 16 inches square. Nice and big. Exciting to have quilt top coming together quickly and it would be great to make space in my fabric bin. Ahem. You realize any space will be filled as soon as it's cleared. ;o) Such is the life of a fabric lover.

OH WOW...Love it!!!! I am planning on adding some Katie Jump Rope fabric in reds and oranges too. Squares on top...still thinking of how I plan to do that!
I have a bit of a fetish with coming up with ideas for scraps...I will be posting one soon.

This looks great! Nice job cleaning out the bin! :) I love all those plaids together, it just looks so cozy. Can't wait to see more.

I love your comment about cleaning out the bin! (Not for long!!!) Yesterday when I was putting together my quilt blocks I ran out of black and white fabric and I wailed, "Oh no! I've run out of fabric!". My husband came running out of his office and said, "I had to see this, because there's fabric everywhere in this room!" Never-the-less I'm off to the fabric store today!

Love your quilt too!

What a wonderful quilt you are making...I love the fact that it is made out of shirts your sons have worn, that it is plaid fabrics, and that it has those beautiful colours.

And I DO recognize the need for filling up empty spaces in the fabric shelf!!

Fantastic, you have inspired me to get back to my boys quilts. Made from old baby blankets and sheets.

Hey, have you been dipping into my hubby's closet? Those plaids are looking mighty familiar! :) And know new they could be recycled to look so good.

I love the way this looks and I can imagine how wonderful it would feel. I have the softest cotton yarn I unraveled from a thrifted sweater. And more space - it's a sickness!!

I love the idea and I love the bin full of shirts. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I won't even let my husband in my sewing room. He must be magnetic, cause he always steps on a straight pin. I'm in there every day and never do.

Love your quilt. I'm just about ready to make a plaid flannel quilt for my oldest grandson who is leaving for college in the fall. I've been searching the web for easy ideas (I'm a fairly new quilter) and love your big squares. While cutting up some of my husbands flannel shirts I decided to leave the pockets on a few pieces and will incorporate them into the quilt top. Also an L.L. Bean tag from one shirt. I'm a button collector, so there will also be a few old buttons sewn on too. Snoozin Susan ;-)
