Penny

You may remember me introducing Miss Thrift (Penny) to you awhile back.
She is made from flannel and has soft chenille yarn for her hair. She is the first doll made from this particular pattern and was easy enough to make. I always seem to tweak patterns as I go along - as was the case with Penny. Once the doll is made, the real creative fun for me begins! Making her clothes. I always love this part.
She looks good from the front, but there were some major issues to the back of this outfit. It didn't fit! I guess I make dolls too plump for their clothes? There was no way I was going to get the apron to fasten at the back of her neck (without strangling and disfiguring Penny - I know, because I tried!). Add in that the dress was also too tight to fasten without major wrestling and you can see the disappearance of the fun factor in clothes making. Phooey!
Now tell me, does she look fat to you?
I tried to get that first dress and apron to fit her. I played with several options in making it work. All would require extra fiddly work (including some stitch ripping... sigh). Finally I just decided to skip the alteration idea and start fresh. It was much simpler to just add extra allowances in the dress bodice to compensate for my apparent over stuffing of her. I loved the first dress (made from a vintage pillowcase), but I really think the pink print from the vintage sheet I used for her new dress looks pretty nice with her red hair. Perhaps I'm just biased. The fact that this dress actually fit without any extra fiddly work makes it a winner in my books. Do I dare attempt making her some shoes??? ;o)

  1. I think the pink dress suits Penny's colouring more so than the blue, not to say I don't like the blue, both dresses are lovely. Although Penny has no pinny now, will you be making her one? x

  2. You know, I have lots of outfits in my closet like dear Penny. So cute, but they just don't quite fit! :) The pink dress is really cute though and it looks really comfy!! A girl needs to be able to breath, right? :)

  3. Yes! Make her some shoes please. Her feet will get cold and she'll get prickles in them if you don't make shoes for her!

  5. She looks absolutely adoring your Penny! Too bad about the first dress - it was beautiful...Maybe a little scarf would do the trick? Isn't that the same as when we (or should I say "I") discreately unbutton my trousers after a terrific meal? ;0)

The new dress does look fantastic as well....It's always nice to have many outfits!! Now she only needs new shoes, and I know the perfect person to make them for her :0)

  9. Yep, you should make her At least one pair of shoes, in the colour of her beautiful hair! When she has shoes she can go outside with you to do some ‘thrifting’!

  10. We can all relate to our garments not quite meeting in the back. I am feeling a close bond with darling Penny. I can't wait to see her shoes.

  11. I love the new little pink frock! Its perfect for spring.

Maybe as she ages, she'll lose a little of her 'fluff' and the other dress will fit her, too.
