What I do on my day off...

The past five days in a row have been spent earning my daily bread working in the garden shop and today I spent part of my day, making our daily bread.
Two teen aged boys in the household means that my homemade bread disappears rather quickly.

I'm rather old-fashioned. I don't use a bread machine or a mixer. I make my bread completely by hand. Whole wheat flour, oatmeal and molasses. It's our favourite bread recipe and I enjoy the process (not to mention how delicious it smells when it's baking).
Fresh bread, anyone? You better be quick! Once my sons smell it from their room on the second story, they will madly dash down the stairs to have a fresh, hot slice (or two or three...) a moment after the bread is out of the bread pan. ;o) Mmmmmm....

  1. I love baking our own bread by hand too - though my children have now decided that shop bought sliced white is the highest prize! Oh well, all the more for hubby and me.

  2. I love the smell of fresh baked bread! I only once tried and it was a failure. We can buy so many lovely kinds of bread that I gave up!

  4. When I make bread (which isn't a regular occurance by any means) I do it the same way. I think it tastes better that way. I have used a bread machine in the past, but it isn't as nice as hand made bread. Hand made everything is the best! How is the job going?

  6. I love the way you put this... a neat play with words. Your bread looks scrumptious. I'd be eating the crust with slabs of butter, dripping with honey!

  7. my mouth is watering just from the photos! my friend makes bread from scratch, too. she says the kneading by hand is a good stress reliever. (and she should know. she has 5 girls!)

  8. Oooh, yum! I cheat and use a breadmaker. Not the same, I know, but it will have to do. Do you freeze your extra loaves or do they disappear too fast?

  9. Oh YES, please! I adore home-baked bread. Love making it too - by hand. I love the process, and the memories of childhood as I do it. I used to do it all the time but now it's a rare treat to spend the time....
