The Good Wife knits

A request for new slippers for my DH has been on my to-do list for awhile. The first and only pair I knit for him, lasted for several years - much longer than my own. I am actually wearing out my third pair (and wanting new ones myself), so it only made sense to pull out the yarn and get knitting! Doesn't that make me a good wife**? ;o)
The pattern to make these  cozy slippers is by Bev Galeskas and they are my all-time favourites. Bear in mind that the ones above are not finished - they look better once they are felted (at this point they look like clown shoes ;o).

I'm almost done with knitting - I only need to knit and attach a second sole to my second slipper and then I can get going with felting (properly known as fulling) them.  I have been in love with this pattern for slippers ever since I knit my very first pair!  I am not an advanced knitter or even intermediate with my knitting skills, but I do have lots of experience using this particular pattern and highly recommend it.  It's so cleverly designed - the entire slipper is knit holding two strands of worsted weight wool,  includes a contrast cuff and a double sole. They are knit overly large so that you can felt (full or purposely shrink them in your washing machine) to the size of the wearer's foot.  The end result is a warm and cushy clog type slipper that is heavenly to wear.  You also have the option of adding a leather sole over the finished slipper sole (which you stitch on AFTER the slipper has been felted and thoroughly dried).  You can buy this pattern in hard copy OR as a PDF download, plus Fiber Trend even sells the suede slipper soles (although I prefer to make my own)!

I still marvel at how these large, floppy looking knits turn into wonderful slippers.  It's magical! Check out the size of my husband's slippers prior to felting (he wears a size 12 shoe)!  I will show the comparison once I felt them.  It's pretty amazing.

**Edited to add**  Annie figured my title out... she was right, I was knitting the slippers while watching a season of the show "The Good Wife" I had borrowed from the library. :o)

  1. I look forward to seeing the transformation Katherine! I have never knitted slippers before! And my husband is a size 12 or 13 too, as are both my sons!

  2. Hi Katherine! this looks great idea! I have made some felting but not with knitting; always thought I should try. Warm slippers are 'must' on our cold marmory floors. Looking for to see your slippers after washing. Have a lovely week! x Teje

  6. Such a good wife indeed! These look so warm and cozy, no wonder DH was asking for a new pair. Just in time for Christmas by the fireplace.
